Why can’t my dog see the TV?

Dogs see like a color-blind human. Many people think that a person who is red / green color blind cannot see any color, but there are variations of color blindness. Most people have vision that is trichromatic (three-color variations). People who are red / green color blind are dichromatic (two color variations).

Here’s why. If your dog follows you into the bathroom, it’s likely a result of their animal instinct and pack mentality. Canines who do this are referred to as “Velcro dogs,” due to their desire to be attached to your side. They may follow you around, even to the bathroom, to protect a part of their pack.
The truth is that some dogs simply don’t like being kissed. That said, dogs who have been trained to accept kisses may eventually tolerate or even enjoy them.

It is really important that you actually walk out the door, lock it, and walk or drive away. The dogs will know if you are just pretending to leave because they won’t hear the familiar indicators, such as your footsteps fading away or the start of the car engine.

Domestic dogs can perceive images on television similarly to the way we do, and they are intelligent enough to recognize onscreen images of animals as they would in real life—even animals they’ve never seen before—and to recognize TV dog sounds, like barking.

Dogs Don’t Like Hugs
So, when you hug a dog, they don’t understand what you’re trying to say. In fact, you’re essentially trapping them. They can’t get away from anything that scares them or makes them uncomfortable while in your arms.

According to Animal Behaviorists, ‘dogs don’t understand human kisses the same way that humans do. ‘ When kissing a young puppy, you may not notice any signs of recognition at all because they have yet to associate kisses with affection.

Your Dog Might Actually Dislike the Noise
So to help lessen that guilt turning on the TV to help soothe our furry friends might seem like a solution to help keep them less lonely. But when it comes down to scientific studies – we actually don’t know if our pup even enjoys this extra noise.

Why Do Some Dogs Watch TV and Others Don’t? Just like people, dogs will get varying enjoyment out of the TV. Different breeds (and different individual dogs) have differing sight capacity, so some dogs may be able to see what is happening on TV better than others.
Because dogs can resolve flickers at 75 Hz, a TV screen probably appears to be rapidly flickering to dogs. This rapid flicker will make the images appear to be less real, and thus many dogs do not direct much attention to it.

Dogs possess only two types of cones and can only discern blue and yellow – this limited color perception is called dichromatic vision.

Dogs like terriers and spaniels may be more drawn to the fast-moving images of television than other breeds.

Do dogs watch TV? Yes, but a pup’s vision differs from that of a human. Christopher Pirie, a veterinary ophthalmologist at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, says that a dog with normal vision sees at 20/60 compared to our 20/20 rating.

They’re used to hearing you make noise and talk to them, so having the TV in the background can help keep them calm.

Leaving Your Dog for Three Days
Preparing to leave your pup during a three-day trip won’t be too different from leaving for a day or two. You’ll find it easiest to recruit someone to stop in a couple times a day to check on food, water, offer plenty of love and provide potty breaks.

Puppies: one hour per every month of age (so a three month old puppy can wait three hours to pee) Adult dogs age one year and up: up to eight hours, but ideally no more than six. Senior dogs age eight and up: depending on size and health, anywhere from two to six hours.

Research conducted by the University of Helsinki found that smaller dogs are more likely to behave aggressively, growl, snap, and bark compared to mid-sized and large dogs.

Some dogs bark at the TV out of excitement, some do it as a reaction to specific sights or sounds, some do it out of frustration, and some do it out of stress and/or fearfulness.
Once you bring a dog into your home, you become part of their pack. They enjoy sleeping with you because it makes them feel safe and comfortable. Sleeping together gives dogs an emotional connection to their owners. Dogs feel love and gratitude towards you, just like you feel towards them.

Some experts believe that dogs know we are a different species, so they wouldn’t consider us eligible for their furry four-legged group. That said, dogs often treat us as like we’re part of one big happy pack. They can be incredibly loyal and loving to their family members.
Smaller screens, such as those found on cell phones or tablets, may make it “harder to recreate the world for the dogs because they’re smaller and the quality is more compressed,” says Ron Levi, chief content officer for DogTV. (See “Why Do Dogs Watch—And React To—TV?”)
