What formula is best for gassy baby with reflux?

It’s fine to feed your baby cool or even cold formula. It’s all up to your baby’s preference – they may prefer it warm, at room temperature, or even chilled, and all of those options are just fine.

If the flow of formula or breast milk from the bottle is too fast, baby might be gulping which can cause gas. Alternatively, if the flow is too slow, baby could suck in more air trying to get more formula. In addition to making sure your baby is drinking at a moderate pace, notice how they are latching onto the bottle.
If your baby has bouts of gas, constipation or acid reflux after eating, it could be the formula. The good news: There are a variety of formulas available, some specifically made for gassy babies or those with sensitive digestive systems.

Babies have very weak neck muscles that cannot fully support their proportionately large heads. Tips to relieve baby’s gas discomfort at night
At the last feed before bedtime, make sure you keep their head higher than their stomach while feeding, and their backs are held as straight as can be. Allow plenty of time to burp your baby mid-feed and post-feed.

If you’re using a powdered formula, make sure you let your freshly mixed bottle settle for a minute or two before feeding your baby. Why? The more shaking and blending involved, the more air bubbles get into the mix, which can then be swallowed by your baby and result in gas.
Tap water is usually safe, but contact your local health department if you are not sure. Shake infant formula in the bottle to mix. Do not stir. You do not need to warm infant formula before feeding.

The usual (and not scientifically accurate) explanation is that shaking the bottle builds up pressure above the liquid, so that when the bottle is opened the extra pressure squeezes the liquid out more quickly.
Do not press/heap the powder. Add the correct measure of powder to the water (please refer to the pack instructions). Adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake immediately, vertically and vigorously for at least 10 seconds, until the powder is dissolved.

Changing Formula for Reflux
Enfamil AR or Similac for Spit-Up are specialty formulas that can be helpful for babies with reflux. 7 They may be an option if your child doesn’t have a milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance.

To mix the formula, it’s a good idea to gently swirl the bottle rather than shaking it vigorously. The latter method is much more likely to introduce air bubbles into the mix that can give your baby gas.
